Am very interested in the matter of dog quarentine, as I am planning to sail to UK via Sth Africa and then back to Australia through the Panama Canal and the Pacific. Are there any Yachties out there who can advise on taking a dog along?

The Uk has recently reconsidered the regulations imposed on domestic dogs and cats from the US. If a favorable outcome is decided, then you will need to follow the PETS Scheme which can be found on the DEFRA page. http://www.defra.gov.uk (this will be the page you will want to follow for all procedures you undertake with your pet).
Also, contact the defra/pet scheme people (found under contact info on the defra page) and ask them any questions you might have, as the British consulate in the US and the American consulate in London don't have a clue on this latest happenings of this topic.
The July 1, 2002 findings are encouraging, and they have decided to go ahead and look further into the matter in the Fall 2002. If you'd like to read it for your own eyes...
http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm
If you happen to be leaving in advance of this reform, then I would tell you that from my research that it is a TERRIBLE idea to submit your animal (as many die from lack of proper care or treatment) to quarantine in the UK. The option (although seemingly not a very good one) left to you is to put your dog or cat into a ‘pet hotel’, which is a lot like a kennel in the US and will ensure the well-being of your animal. What this does is establish your animal as an “EU Pet” so that after 6 months of established residency in Europe they can enter under the regular pet scheme that all of the rest of Europe enjoys. Also, it is a LOT cheaper to house your dog or cat in a pet hotel than in quarantine.
Best to you!

I heard that the situation is changing in that with Veteranarian certification that all rabies shots are current, there is a small chip can be placed under the skin at neck and no quarentine is necessary.
Is this true?? if so when will this happen?
I need a solution for my Pug!! (my sweetheart)

If anyone has any up to date information regarding taking dogs from the US to the UK I will be most grateful. I have my three dogs living here in US with me brought from England this year. We may need to return to England next year and I don't want to have to put three dogs in quarrantine for six months. Any help will be appreciated thankyou

I'm also looking into bringing my dog from the Dominican Republic back to the UK around April 2003. The dog has been fully vaccinated and has her papers but the vets there do not have 'micro chipping'. Can anyone give me an idea on what I can do?

you can get back to the uk from the usa via hawaii, but pets must spend 90 days in quarantine there and hve official hawaiin microchips
i was going to do that but opted for 6 months in europe as i cant bear to be without my baby, i have done 1 month and already found a way back home, just dont give up, other options are, nz, australia, japa, eytc

I am finding out - that United KIngdom may be lifting quarentine by end of this month, but you will have to wait 6 months after blood test of your pet. Here is some helpful site's to go on to: passports.forpets@virgin.net & defra.gov.uk.
Keep me posted, and I will keep in touch.
Lisa.

are animals quarantined upon reaching hawaii from the mainland? Or are you talking about going to the UK? If you are going to the UK, you can participate int he PETS Travel Scheme b/c Hawaii was included last year.
