cats to NZ

We are moving from the UK to NZ and want to take two cats with us. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has done this and what the effects may be on the animals. Would he be better to find new homes for them rather than put them through the ordeal? (I understand that there is no quarantine from the UK - but how is the journey for them?) ALso, any idea of cost? Do I contact the airlines?
