I'm looking for a tour operator, agent or organization that specializes in trips for single parents with an emphasis on nature and outdoor activity. Any tips, leads or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dear: Mary McGrath and JoeMikeS,
We understand that there is growing recognition of the needs of single parents in the travel and tourism industry. Several hotel/resort chains, travel agents and tour operators have introduced programs and packages for children traveling with mom or dad. Amongst them are The Hyatt Regency in Beaver Creek, Colorado (at 800/233-1234), the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, near Orlando (at 800/FON-MAXX), ClubMed in Eleuthra, the Bahamas and Ixtapa, Mexico (call 800/CLUBMED) and Premier Cruise Lines’ Big Red Boats (call 800/726-5678). Rascals in Paradise (800/ U-RASCAL), Escapes Unlimited (800/243-7227), Backroads (800/462-2848 and the Sierra Club (415/977-5630) offer group trips for single-parent families and “Quality Time Travel,” an agency specializing in single parent vacations can be reached at 516/543-4009.
Another very interesting tour operator is Roots & Wings Excursions (tel. 800/722-9005) who organize clever itineraries for Moms & daughters, Dads & sons, Grandparents & grandchildren, and many variations on this so that parents can travel one-on-one with kids on specific journeys of interest to men, women, etc. They enable single parents to join some excellent small group programs with other families, even though some of the other adults won’t necessarily be "single."

We have introduced single parent vacations. Check our web page at www.eastover.com or call 1-800-822-2386. It's a family owned and managed resort which has been in business for 51 years.

The "Eastover Resort" in Lenox, Ma. is no longer catering solely to the "single parent week". They just offer a "family week". Just to let you know.
I would appreciate any info where they do offer vacations soley to us, the single parent.

Hi,
I am also a single parent and I am organizing a Single Parent with Kid(s) Cruise for June, 2004.
I had taken my 2 teens cruising before and we all had a great time, but I found that my children easily made friends with the other children on the boat and I was alone most of the time! So I figure if we had a group of single parents together, we would have other adults to do things with!
If interested e-mail me at aherring@world-net.net

I am a teen and I go on vacations with my mom all the time. There are a lot of great vacation spots I would recomend. THere is the Franklin D Resort in Jamacia. It has activities and clubs depending on the age of the child, and it has a lot of adult activities. I loved it and my mom also made a lot of new friends as well. There is also the club med resort which is about 2 horus away from orlando. It is a resort which is very popular for single parents. It again has different clubs and activites for kids of various ages, and for adults it has activites and dinners and at the dinners you sit in a big group so you can meet a lot of new people. A lot of single parents were there. There is also the beaches resort in the carribiean. I have never stayed at beaches resort only franklin D resort and club med and it was aweosome. I played beach volleyball, went to kid dance parties, learned how to scuba dive. I dont know how old your child is but there clubs that were for all ages and u will enjoy one of those hotels very much.

I have an 11 yr daughter and the best vacation ever was the time we went to Florida and went to discovery cove for the whole day...(reservation only) then we drove to St. Peterburg and stayed at this resort I can't think of the name at the moment but if you're interested I can find out and get back to you....it had a little canal that the you take a paddle boat around the resort..Night time volleyball, line dancing, I think 3 pools. Best of all there were hammocks around the resort to relax in with a good book that overlooks the ocean. Very relaxing vacation.
My friends and family couldn't believe we went all the way to Florida and didn't see DisneyWorld. We have no regrets...
I looking for something for around the Christmas holiday. I leaning towards sking or sled riding down a nice hill.

Hi. I am new to this. I have a 5 yr old son. We did Disney last October with a friend and her daughter. I just want to do something with just the 2 of us. I looked into Discovery Cove. You have to be 6 yrs old to swim with the dolphins. I am planning a trip there next year. They also have weekends, that you can sleep on the Beach at Discovery Cove too. It sounds really nice.
I need suggestions. I live in New Jersey.
I was even thinking Mystic, Ct...
Thanks

I have a six year old son. When he turned 4 we went on a Disney Cruise. I don't know if it was on purpose or on accident that I ended up with another single mother at my dining table each day. It was nice to not have to look at all these couples having a great time together and feeling like the 5th wheel. I did however have to pay full fare for my son. Believe me him and I took great advantage of the free room service and if he wanted cookies at 2 in the morning he got them, delivered warm and fresh to our door. Disney of course also offered great things for us to do together and a great kids program so I could go on some excursions by myself. If anyone hears of a themed "single parent cruise" please let me know. It would be nice to be treated like a parent with a child, including the discounts children usually receive instead of being treated like I was two adults. Frankly he did not eat or drink much and should not be charged for a full fare which includes the meals. Thanks and good luck to everyone and their travels.

WELL, TRY THIS SENARIO. I AM A SINGLE MOM, FATHER IS DECEASED. MY OLDEST IS 22 THE YOUNGEST 15. WELL, I HAVE TO PAY ADULT PRICE FOR ALL THREE OF US US. DON'T PEOPLE IN THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY REALIZE THAT A SINGLE PARENT IS STILL RESPONSIBLE FINANCIALLY FOR THEIR KIDS AND WOULD LIKE TO PROVIDE A NICE FAMILY VACATION WITHOUT ALL THE RESTRICTIONS. THERE HAS TO BE A PLACE SOMEWHERE THAT WANTS TO CATER TO THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE. I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO TAKE MY KIDS SOMEWHERE THIS SUMMER BUT CAN'T AFFORD THE 3 ADULT PRICE AT MOST RESORTS. ANY IDEAS???

While looking for a single parents cruise (no luck so far) for me and my two teenage boys (13 & 18)I found the following on http://family.go.com/travel/places/expert/dony1200singpar_ft/dony1200singpar_ft.html
Some of these are for younger children, but they may provide some resources. Also, I did find that the Parents Without Partners group is sponsoring a single parents cruise in October. But I imagine that is for adults, since it is during the school year.
Vacations for Single Parents and Their Kids
I'd like to take my six-year-old on a vacation, but I'm finding that most packages are booked as two adults. There are no discounts given for the child--it seems that single parents are penalized. My departure and destination are both flexible. I'm at my wit's end. Please help!
The travel industry seems to be a bit slow in realizing that many of its customers don't fit the traditional nuclear family unit. Hey, folks, times are a-changin'. Alas, as you've discovered, single parents are often penalized by the per-double-occupancy rates. But you do have a few fine options:
First, check out Quality Time Travel (call 631-543-4009, 888-758-9386 outside New York, or click here.) This three-and-a-half-year-old firm offers vacation packages designed for single parents, ferreting out resorts that offer single occupancy rates and top-notch children's programs. For further cost-cutting, the company will match up single parent/child combos. Most excursions are offered during school and summer vacation times and run the gamut from Carribean cruises, ski vacations, all-inclusive resorts, ranches, even spa vacations. The biggest advantage, says company president Sharon Saffon, "is making single parent travel more comfortable. No more feeling like the fifth wheel."
If you're looking for a resort, try the Eastover Resort in Lenox, Massachusetts. This all-inclusive property sits on 1,000 acres in the pretty Berkshire Hills and offers informal, inexpensive fun. There are many activities (skiing, sledding, biking, hiking, tennis, golf, indoor and outdoor pools and more), and three meals a day. Adults pay full rate; children ages 3-7 get 1/2 off; children 8-12, pay 3/4. The resort also hosts a single- parent-family-only week in July. Call 800-VACAFUN or click here for more information.
Note: If there's a resort you have in mind, always inquire about single parent programs; they may have them. Also ask local tourist offices the same question.
Some types of vacations lend themselves to single-parent travelers. Consider an adventure getaway, like white water rafting, hiking or walking vacations, horseback riding or camping. These excursions are often priced per participant, with discounts for children. For example, sign up for an Appalachian Mountain Club (800-367-3364; www.outdoors.org) family hiking weekend, or hit the trails with Wagons West (800-447-4711; www.wagonswest.com) on a horseback/wagon train ride in the spectacular Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming.
Have a great trip!

I took my son to FDR Pebbles in Jamaica last April and it was WONDERFUL. It wasn't, however, geared towards single parents so I spent a lot of time with married couples or alone.
The place is fantastic, though...every family (or parent) is assigned a vacation-nanny. She took my son to every activity and watched him in the pool, etc. She was terrific.
Now...if only a place like that would run a special for Single Parents...we could have some REAL fun.

I don't have any tips on reduced rates for single parents with kids. However, I am a single Mom with a 15 year old daughter. I have found a number of great resorts for teens and reduced rates (during off season). Unfortunately she connects with friends and ditches me! With all the parents "reconnecting" it can be a pretty lonely place. Club Med is great for kids of all ages and, with community dining, at least I don't have to dine alone!
Does anyone have any other suggestions for a single Mom?

Don't know if it is too late, try going on a cruise. I just returned from Alaska with my 8 year old. We both had a wonderful time. We sailed on Celebrity Cruise's Mercury but many cruise lines have children's programs: Carnival, Norwegian, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity all have children's activities with youth co-ordinators. Also check with Costa Cruises which occasionally has single parent deals.

Hi,
Just came across this web-site. I am looking for a very reasonable get-away (driving or flying) for 4 or 5 days for my 9-yr old girl and myself (lots of activities, history, culture maybe). I don't want to spend much more than $800 - $1,000 in total. I was thinking of a few days in San Diego, Lake Arrowhead, Mexico (a dude ranch or beach-side resort). Any ideas? Want to go before school starts on the 13th.

Read over some information involving your program and would like more information. I am a single parent of two children and just graduated college. Enjoying what life had thrown my way and wish too share it with my children. Glad to see that some people in this world cares about the children today and their future

I'm trying to find a way to get a group of single parents and kids together at Disneyworld. I'm a single mom with a 6 year old son. It would be fun to just meet there. I am trying for October.Anyone interested?

I can't do October. I was thinking of something more in early 2002...Jan, Feb or March. I have a 7 year old son and the thought of going away and seeing other couple families makes me cringe. Please email me and let me know how you made out. Where do you live? I live right outdside of NYC.

I am also interested in a single parents group trip to DisneyWorld. I have two girls ages 8 and 6. I was thinking of going mid-February or March. I would love to hear from someone who knows of a group or would like to put one together.
