Is getting shots before travelling over-the-top? I mean, it wouldn't hurt right? But my guy said it was ridiculous and unnnecessary. Anyway, any specific immunizations one should get before going to the Caribbean?

You won't need shots for most Caribbean destinations, but you can always check the
Center for Disease Control for advice if you're concerned (wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/). The
biggest health risk right now in the Caribbean region is dengue fever and there is no shot
that will prevent it.
Since it's spread by mosquito bites, your best bet is to wear long sleeved shirts and pants and use an insect repellent containing plenty of DEET. That will help protect you from the pesky little no-see-ums that bite like crazy - they're not dangerous, just annoying.
Make sure you're up to date on typhoid and hep A and B vaccines - that's smart for any kind of travel. And if you're traveling in Haiti or rural areas of the Dominican Republic you might need some kind of malaria medication. Check the CDC website for specifics on each country.
please since the tropic are full of insects please carry insectide treated mosquito/insect net. And try sleep under it , note that the net while preventing insect allows air to flow thru it. the net are usually very cheap.
