Our family is planning for our first visit to Disney World this coming November or December. My wife and I have three children ages 7, 11, and 13. Our middle child, Sam, is autistic and prone to occasional outbursts so we are trying to maintain some flexibility and still make it an enjoyable and affordable trip. We will try to pick an off-peak time and plan to fly non-stop to avoid potential stress causers. We are open to any other suggestions for accomodations or other planning that will make it a pleasant experience for the whole family. Thanks.

We agree that choosing a mid-day, non-stop flight will be the least stressful way for your family to get to Orlando. Be sure to arrive at the airport early so you can select seats together, as many airlines will no longer issue advance boarding passes. If your travel agent can arrange a day pass to your airline's private club, this will also minimize the pressures of waiting. Also, be sure to carry snacks and drinks for everyone since many airlines have decreased their food service. To insure some privacy during down-time at your hotel, consider one of the all-suite hotels which have separate areas for parents and kids. Holiday Inn's Kidsuites, cleverly designed with kids in mind, are available at their Main Gate East property in Kissimmee (800/366-5437 or 407/396-4488) and at their Sunspree Resort in Orlando (800/366-6299, 407/239-4500) with free Disney Shuttles and rates ranging from $49-$149/suite. For other hotel suggestions, read News from Orlando in the Deals section of the website, or locate information in our Archives.
To request special assistance for your special needs family during your vacation to DisneyWorld, visit their Guest Relations booth upon your arrival. It's a good idea to bring a physician's note stating the medical condition of the party concerned. Spokesman Michael H. from Guest Relations (info @407/824-4633) recommends that you request a yellow Assistance Pass which will enable a disabled guest and up to 5 members of their party to avoid heavy crowds by using an alternate entrance to the attractions. The pass will be accepted at each of the four major parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, MGM Studios and Animal Kingdom). Unfortunately, the pass cannot be issued prior to your arrival
