I am planning a trip to Australia in mid-january.
Is it hard to get rooms at this time of year? Is it possible to get rooms on a day to day basis?

Any advice would be much appreciated. I am planning to book my accomodations before hand , while searching the net I came across asiarooms.com but I am little confused which travel portal to refer for hotel bookings.

Hi, my recommendation is that you book before coming to Oz, January is high season and hotels, hostels and such as pretty busy during that time.

I can help with the the Tropical North Queensland bit, I run a travel website and know the area pretty well. My email is maria@cairnsunlimited.com

Cheers and speak to you soon,
Maria

Where are you planning to visit in Australia ? It;s a big place.

I think Cairns is one of my favorite places, I love all those plaes to stay around Lake Street and it's nice to get a rental and drive up to the beaches north of Cairns.

Australian booking agents would give you the best selection for hotels and accommodation so find places like Maria has suggested and get the benefit of knowledge from the 'locals' who always have the local information you really need to enjoy a stay.
You need to plan which places to visit as distances are great, Virgin Blue, Qantas have flights and you have to check for the cheap deals, Tiger Airways starts some flights in November from Melbourne.
You need to say where in Australia you are going ?

I've never been to Australia but my aunt has. She went during mid January to Sydney and said the majority of people she met were tourist as well. I forgot what hotel she stayed at but when she checked in she over heard one of the worker at the hotel say they had no more rooms available. Best bet is to book way in advance.

G'day Richard,
Australia is big, I mean BIG :-)
How much time have you got and what are your planned destination?
It's summer in January and also school holidays. That means it's hot, at least anywhere north of Sydney and of course in the Red centre.
It also means that it's high season and as others have stated, you are well advised to reserve rooms well in advance.

I run tours throughout the whole of the country but during summer I restrict my activities to the south.

Back to your question about booking rooms:
During the rest of the year it's no problem getting a room at any time.
It's the school holidays and the peak travel season for people from the northern hemispherethat make it almost imperative that you book early.

Should you need any other info then don't hesitate to ask.

Wish you a good time in Australia,
Mike Hofmann.

It would be nice to have more messages and information about Australia. We would like to do some of those outback trips in Australia as they look great fun. We ventured from Cairns and Darwin on previous travels to Australia but would like to do Alice Springs and the real ouback areas of Australia on our next visit.

It'd be great if you had a wider coverage of Australia, work your way from North to South or vice versa, you'd see the difference

Hey Richard and everyone!

As previous posters said mid January is a peak period with most aussies taking holidays plus there is school holidays. February would be a perfect time to holiday if possible as the prices start to drop as everyone goes back to work. February still has some great temperatures and hopefully you'll find less tourists in this period.

The above posters forgot to mention Jetstar as a cheap airline, Jetstar and virgin actually have a flight sale on at the moment.

I work in the travel activities industry so for things to do Australia wide you can check out my sites below if you'd like.

Also check out a few car/van rental places like wicked for cheap camper vans, travelling by road will give you the freedom to explore more than what you'd normally see on a tour

Good luck with your travels!
