Dear All

I think it is wonderful that more and more families/mums and dads are exploring countries with their children. With a little research and common sense I believe everyone can enjoy the wonder of travel.

I have a specific question to ask on behalf of an Australian friend. He is considering travelling through Thailand with his 5 year old son. My friend's little lad is a sparky soul who not shy on adventure!

How safe/stressful/fun/easy/interesting is it to travel in Thailand with a wee one. Personally I truly believe children benefit enormously from exploring other countries, seeing other cultures first hand.

It would be a wonderful opportunity for both of them. Does anyone have advice, tips, accommodation recommendations, ideas on where to go and conversely where not to go? It would be great to have some first hand accounts.

You can e-mail me at toriaot@hotmail.com

Look forward to hearing from you and happy travelling!

Toria

Travelling with chidren often creates more opportunities to talk with locals and interact with them.We recently took our four children with us to Laos from the U.S. The people were so much more friendly and open than when we had been ther by ourselves a few years ago !

Thailand is a wonderful destination with kids because the Thai people adore children. They have very gently, considerate ways and a very thoughtful and caring society which protects and shelters women and children. A 5-year-old or any age child will be welcomed in fancy restaurants, quiet temples, busy beaches, even in the 'red light' districts at Patpong and other cities. It's a clean and safe country, remember to bring a lot of sunblock, drink only bottled water, and keep your child away from ices, juices and other fresh street food which can cause stomach upsets. Bring good swim shoe, such as Tevas, because certain beaches will have sea urchins living close to shore. Most other kids supplies, including very inexpensive clothes, sneakers, toys, even books, etc. can be bought at Bangkok's Central Dept. store and in most Thai cities. Also, the long distance buses are comfortable to get around on, however, watch your belongings on them as well as on long distance trains, which are okay for shorter distances (much more fun to ride for kids) but too slow for long distance travel.
