Oregon and California road trip

We are traveling with two children,9and 5, and possibly a small dog down the coast to San Diego and back. Am looking for a good itinerary as well as recommended places to stay and sights to see on the way down the coast.

I don't know if it is too late to add a comment or two to you question...but we just got back from San Diego (we live in San Francisco) and did the whole nine yards. We were there for four days and we went to Sea World, Wild Animal Park, and San Diego Zoo. If you don't have alot of time I would recommend Wild Animal Park and the Zoo. But then again your children are much older than mine so they might enjoy sea world more. We stayed at this wonderful place called Old Town Cottages. It was a one bedroom cottage with a full kitchen...with a 3 and a 7 month old...it was absolutely worth it. and we paid only about 100.00 a night. Hope this helps.

Last year we drove from San Francisco up through northern California to Crater Lake Oregon and back down the coast to San Fran with two nine year olds.

Where are you originating from? How long do you have for your vacation? With the ages of your kids you will want lots of opportunities to run, play, and have action. California has a lot to offer. There are lots of kid friendly attractions in the greater San Francisco area. Then further south Big Sur where there is a neat lodge that might be fun for a night or two.
Then Disneyland, Universal Studio and nearing San Diego their great zoo, Sea World. And there is Oregon... Don't plan too much for one vacation.
