I just finished reading "Australia's Outback by Train" after receiving the FTF newsletter.
I congratulate the author and recommend that anyone thinking of visiting Australia should read this article.

For those who have more time, are looking for a little more adventure, wishing to experience what it's really like in those Outback and Desert regions and who wish to get close to nature, I recommend my own tours :-)

We run tours from Melbourne to Alice Springs ( 14 days ) and Melbourne to Darwin ( 23 days ).
Our routes take us "Off The Beaten Track" with detours to the Tourist Ikons, but also to many little known and very spectacular places.

In our 4WD vehicle we also visit the Flinders Ranges, travel alongside the original "Old Ghan" railway tracks and visit towns like William Creek ( Population 9 ), Coober Pedy the Opal Capitol of the world, and after Uluru and Kings Canyon of course Palm Valley where we drive in the Worlds oldest River - The Finke.

Further north we cruise in the Katherine Gorge, visit the Kakadu and the Litchfield Nat. Parks and more.
Those are just a few of the Highlights.

I mentioned "more adventure".
Many nights we will be camping under the stars and cook our evening meals on our camp fires.

The ideal number of participants ( and the maximum ) is 4.
We can also run those tours for just 2 people, but it then becomes much more expensive.
Our tours can be very flexible and customized ( within reason ).

See you in Australia,
Mike
