I am interested in connecting with other single parents, to share ideas of places to visit in the winter especially in Europe although other places would be interesting also.
I am an older man with a 3 yr old son. Skiing has limited interest for us, but we need a place with good activities for the little ones, and lots of support.
Would like to go places where we will meet other single parents also.
Any ideas?

Valtur, which is like an Italian version of Club Med, has "villages" with programs for children of all ages. When we visited the ski village in Pila, Italy, there were loads of kids and a number of single parents. Check out the Valtur website -- there are several other Valturs that offer skiing - Sestriere is one -- where the last winter Olympics were held. http://www.valtur.it/resort/discover.htm

Valtur sounds interesting, but at the end of the winter I don't look forward to outfitting myself and a 3 year old for skiing only to throw away most of the clothes in another month. Also I think 3 is a bit young for skiing, and for myself, I don't have much enthusiasm for breaking my leg at my age, 67!
I must say, I do like cross country skiing, and used to do it, but that was quite a few years ago. When my son is a little older I think we will try it if I can find a good place to do it. (In my youth I went to Yosemite where it is wonderful, but I don't know the best places in Europe. In any case I will wait until my son is at least 5 or 6.

But perhaps valtur has other activities in the spring or early summer?

I like the idea of a club med type environment with lots of families, expecially with other single parents.
Do they have good warm indoor pools?
Any other suggestions?

Valtur has year-round activities in their various locations. Go on their website and check out their villages. You may find one that suits your needs.

I too am a single parent and travel regularly with my kids, now aged 4 and 6. The 3 of us have been travelling together since they were very tiny. I've found city breaks and beach breaks the most popular. They love wandering around new cities, particularly with regular stops in municipal playgrounds, and they equally love sandcastles and swimming. The most recent city breaks were to London and Barcelona although any European capital would be great! Good luck. I think it's a brilliant thing to do to travel with kids, they make great exploring companions.

The original thread was posted sometime ago but I just found this site! I have been travelling abroad with my now nine year old for about six years now. When I travel with a single child, I definitely look for resorts with Kids' Clubs. www.holidayswithkids.com.au has a list of them. A singleton needs to be around peers on vacation, and if I need a break from child care I have it. Alas, there are no good options to travelling as a single parent if you ask me. the issue really is whether you have someone to sit down with at the end of the day. I don't care about the single supplement, and I won't travel in the off season to avoid it. Responsibletravel.com has a lot of single parent trips to great places and they claim not to charge a single supplement. I wish there were more of those. Typically, I will get up early and do my touring, leaving the evening to dinner in the room or early to bed. Thus far, the best places I have been have been Club Med (really, even though the accomodations are spartan), and the Cousteau Resort in Fiji. We go to Puerto Vallarta every XMas & New Year's, but, frankly, I rarely have a date for the big night! But, the weather's glorious. Good luck!

HI

My name is john and i have 11 year old beautiful daughter, and we are planning to take a trip to asia this season ( maybe 2 months after). We probably go to Nepal and Tibet for peaceful and unique vacation that we were planning for almost a year. I am divorced and yes its little difficult to manage things when you are single parents.
Its hard , but I believe this vacation will freshen up both of us..

Hope to see you guys later and good luck

John
