I am not sure if you've been to SF before, but the airport is about 15-20 minutes away from San Francisco, in San Bruno.
If you have to do stuff in San Bruno, it is kind of nothing but the airport, I'd just take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Into the City when I had leisure time. Otherwise, I'd probably want to stay on the Warf this time of year. The Sheraton is nice and not too pricey.
It's only a couple of blocks from the warf. Make sure you grab a freshly cooked dungeness crab from one of the street vendors. A great lunch is a clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl and a dungeness crab coctail. It will somewhat overpriced on the Warf, but a really fun experience.
If you'd rather stay in Union Square; I love the Clift Hotel. It's small, inexspensive, and has one of the most beautiful bars, huge high solid redwood ceilings and you can walk to a ton of great shopping and food.
Make sure you take cab into China Town! You can find all kinds of great inexspensive gifts for family back home (for $5 I got my son a rubberband shooter and for $10 I got my daughter a beautiful tea set, for $12 I got a beautiful dragon kite for each of them). Plus the food is just SO good.
