We're planning a trip to Maui in February. We've never been to Hawaii before. There are 5 of us: my husband and I, our two kids (ages 2 and 4 when we go) and my sister, who will watch the kids at night while we go out. I've made a tentative reservation at both the 4S and the Kea Lani but I'm having reservations due to the cost. I've reserved the low end room in both places (about $500/night) but since we'll need 2 rooms, that really adds up. So, I'm looking around at other very-family-friendly properties and also condos. Since it's our first trip, we were hoping to stay at a resort if only for the services (food, pools, suggestions).

Anyone stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel? Is it really a dump or is it "nice enough"? Granted, it's not the 4Seasons, I get it, but is it something that will make our skin crawl or is it fine, just not luxury? Does the family-friendliness of it make up for the old-ness?

Any suggestions on Maui for condos that will likely have other families with little kids? It's so much easier with other families around, kids play with kids and my hubby and I can have a conversation or two. . .

Would love your suggestions.

I've stayed at the Ka'anapali with my two children and think it's an excellent option that is very well-priced. The hotel is older, but it has a terrific layout with the hotel spreading around a huge, simple palm-tree shaded grassy garden that is filled with chaisses. The rooms are absolutely fine -- ask for one of the larger ground-floor types that open onto a small patio and then the grassy garden area.

The staff go out of their way to make guests comfortable and they pride themselves on being the most Hawaiian of hotels, and offer lei making, hula dancing, etc. They also host a children's hula contest each year -- a very serious one drawing young dancers from all of the islands.

Because this resort is one of the older resorts on this stretch of coast, it commands the best and widest section of beach.

It's definitely not the Four Seasons, but it is filled with families and has a nice pool and a very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere. The restaurant is also very good for dinner. Good luck!
