I am trying to find the best spot to take my family skiing. I have two boys - they will be 4 and 1.5 at the time of our trip. The four year old would do some ski lessons and the 1.5 year old would need some sort of nursery programs.

Any suggestions?

Being Colorado native & a skier for years, my family prefers the Vail Valley. Here you are close to Beaver Creek, Copper Mountain, Ski Cooper & Vail. Plus there are a lot of activities for the family & the nightlife is awesome!

We go to a great family mountain, Burke Mountain, in northern Vermont. Not knowing where you live, I can tell you it takes us 3 hours to get there from the Boston area. We stay at the Wildflower Inn which is a fantastic place for families. Plenty of things for the kids to do and a very freindly atmosphere. here are 2 links - www.skiburke.com and www.wildflowerinn.com

Good luck with your planning!

Most ski areas have learn-to-ski programs for children ages four and up, but not all have daycare for 18 month olds. If you have the $$ it's great to stay at the base of the lifts in resorts that have children's programs in the same place. Saves the headache of schlepping the little ones and all their gear too far!

Telluride CO has an excellent daycare program that is well-located right at the base of the upper mountain where the majority of condos and skier services are situated.

Snowmass C0 is known for its family programs, and daycare starts at 18 months. It too has condos well located at the base and activities planned just for families.

Deer Valley in Park City Utah has an excellent daycare and children's ski school all in the same building and luxurious accommodations and great restaurants.

The Canyons, also in Park City, has a flagship hotel at the base of the lifts that also has a daycare in the hotel, so you don't even have to go outside.

Snowbird Utah right outside of Salt Lake also has a large base hotel with a daycare in it and ski school just outside.

Beaver Creek CO has an excellent daycare and kids ski school and is a purpose built ski village with lots going on for families.

In case you are closer to the west coast, there are some good resorts in California. Mammoth Mountain and Heavenly Valley would be two to check out that have daycare and a good children's ski school.

Because there are so many ski areas that now have kids learn to ski programs and good daycare, you might even want to think about what kind of experience the parents want and go from there!

Alta Utah is another ski area with a terrific kids' ski school and daycare for children as young as six weeks. Snowboarders aren't allowed, so you don't tend to get as many teenagers here, which can be more relaxing on the slopes. The old-fashioned Alta Lodge is an excellent option for families, as it even has a special children's seating at dinner.

Can anyone recommend good ski destinations for a family of 4 from Atlanta, Georgia, including boys aged 5 and 8? Thanks.

If you want great snow conditions, you're probably better off going west than east, since eastcoast skiing can tend to be icy. But great ski programs for children are found in most resorts coast to coast, with specialized ski schools, instructors trained for little ones, etc.

Park City, Utah is a great family destination. It's an old-west style town with three ski areas right there -- The Canyons, Deer Valley, and Park City Mountain Resort. You can stay at at the base of any of the resorts, or in town and shuttle to any of the slopes. There's also a lift-served tubing run. Park City is about a 45 minute drive from the Salt Lake City airport

Park City hosted many events for the 2002 Olympic games, and you can visit the Olympic Park that has ski jumping lessons, aerials training, a museum, and bobsledding and luge rides (more for teens and adults).

Beaver Creek Colorado is another great area with kids that age and is easy to fly into. Keystone Colorado is also fun, as is Vail, which has a snow fun park called Adventure Ridge with tubing, ice skating, snow bikes, etc. In winter, flights go into a large airport called Eagle - it's much closer than flying into Denver.

I have always really enjoyed Snowmass Colorado. It's easy to get to, and has excellent children's programs. We've been there three times over the years with our kids, and have enjoyed it everytime. There are many condos that are within walking distance of the slopes. It's very low-key and not as fancy as Beaver Creek, which we liked. You can also take a bus ride into Aspen to poke around, or get a babysitter and go into Aspen for dinner one night with your spouse. There are also lots of other families around, so it's totally comfortable. Plus there are other kids for your children to play with.

I've also heard that Sundance Utah is great for families because it's kind of small. Anyone been there to check it out?

Beaver Creek Colorado and Deer Valley Utah are both very posh resorts that are well set up for families. They are expensive, but if you can afford it, everything they do is first class. My husband and I have found ski vacations to be one of the best family vacations for all of us. He and I get time alone on the chairlift, the kids have fun in their various programs, and we all have fun together too.

Have fun!

My family really loves Sun Valley, which seems to be off the radar a bit. It's in Idaho and is absolutely gorgeous, with excellent kids programs and a really fun "village" with a bowling alley in the basement of the flagship hotel. Plus there are two ice skating rinks. It's really fun.
