South Padre Island is a great family resort. There are wonderful beachfront parks with picnic pavillions and children's playgrounds. In the marina, there is a tour boat called the dolphin watch that searches for dolphins and picks up marine life from the ocean so children can view them up close. The Univ of Tx at Pan Am's marine lab can be viewed free of charge to the public. Sea Turtle Inc offers a presentation by the "Turtle Lady" about turtles. There is an Amphibious Tour vehicle that cruises the land and water for a great family adventure. At the North end of the Island there is a wonderful Nature Trail that educates on the Island's inhabitants. Also, horseback riding is offered on the beach. There are all kinds of water sports, too. Across the bridge, there is the famous Port Isabel Lighthouse, historic museum, and Golf course. The Gladys Porter Zoo is a 30 minute drive.
A great place to stay is the newly built Mediterranean duplex. It is located near many of the Island's great restaurants, shops, and grocery store. Everything is walking distance. www.spi-mediterranean.com
