urban wilderness travel

Has any family visited any urban wilderness spots in the U.S., such as found in Portland Oregon, Washington DC, Austin TX, Charleston SC and other places? I'm a travel writer doing a piece for a national magazine and I'd like to interview a family that has. Would you let me know?
