Hello fellow travellers. I'm travelling with my husband and 2 young children (4 and 7 years) to southern Australia for 5 months. We're touring South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, ACT and more briefly NSW. We're hoping to hire a houseboat for 3-5 nights (if its affordable!) and I was wondering where we should hire it from. Should we go from Murran Bridge or Mannum and see the high cliffs or go from Renmark or maybe even Echuca? I know the Murray is all beautiful so where is the best spot? I want to be able to moor at spots where the children can swim too, although it will be September! We'll no doubt go on a paddlesteamer at Echuca. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I love the Murray and I think anywhere along the stretch will be enjoyable. I do like Mildura and Echuca but there are sandy spots for the kids to play all along the river. Maybe map a course that has plenty of towns just in case they get restless on board so you can go ashore for a break regularly. September will be lovely, just starting to warm up and the rain should have passed.
I'm sorry I could not help more, we have a family travel site http://www.byokids.com.au you should find some more information there.
Have fun
Leah
