How is one ever to pack for a trip in the current atmosphere? To read that Delta does not allow backpacks for children (or anyone else, I gather) presents an interesting dilemma. Two weeks ago, my son, his three children and I flew British Airways to London. At the check-in desk in Chicago, we were told that we could carry on nothing weighing over thirteen pounds. Having intended to carry-on backpacks for the boys and roll-ons (which have always been, otherwise, the proper carry-on size), we had to do some rapid repacking on the spot. Fortunately, I'd packed two canvas bags for day-trip items. The boys were permitted their backpacks plus various other items. All camera equipment came out of our bags which had to become checked baggage.
A few months ago, flying Northwest, I was permitted my purse (which is good-sized) and one other bag (backpack) but had to stuff the newspaper I'd just purchased into the backpack so that I would not exceed the checked baggage limit.
Where is reality?
