MARTINIQUE: HEIGHTENED SECURITY MEASURES FRENCH VIGIPIRATE PLAN
INSTITUTED TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS AND THE TOURISM INDUSTRY
Ever since the horrific attacks in the U.S. have triggered security
alerts across the world, France was placed on a heightened security
program involving the deployment of armed troops at airports, and other
public places.
The French security alert program, which follows a plan code named
Vigipirate, was first introduced in France in 1995, provides for the use
of the army to maintain public safety and to guarantee the protection
and security of the inhabitants.
Martinique was no exception to the rule; as a French Overseas
Department, the island was also placed on high security alert as soon as
September 12, 2001, aiming at protecting both its citizens and its
tourism industry.
In Martinique, Vigipirate calls for the use of the military, the army
and all security forces to reinforce security measures in all public
places, public buildings, the airport and the ports.
The Fort-de-France Lamentin international airport in Martinique – one of
the largest airports for large aircraft carriers after Paris – as well
as the two main port entries in Fort-de-France (mainly used for the
cruise industry and for the island’s export and import facilities), have
received a particular attention. Patrols were reinforced and security
measures have been increased.
It is important to mention that the airport safety resources and
infrastructure were evaluated in November 2000 (among the auditors, a
representative of the FAA), and the results of the report were
favorable. The Martinique Chamber of Commerce, who manages the
Fort-de-France Lamentin international airport is guaranteeing that
everything has been put in place to reinforced all aspects of airport
security (luggage screening, access control, surveillance), thus making
all airline companies operating on the island confident that passenger
safety is of utmost concern.
It is indeed important to remind that Martinique welcomes more that
500,000 visitors a year, and more than 1.5 million passengers transit
every year through its international airport.
