Last month, we took our two children to Italy for 3 weeks and decided we wanted to spend a good portion of our time in one location to avoid the hassles of traveling with the kids. We rented an apartment through Roman Reference (http://www.romanreference.com) - our apartment was located very close to Piazza Navona which is a great location for places to eat - especially gelato which our youngest wanted every day. The apartment had 2 bedrooms plus a sofa-sleeper, bathroom and a full kitchen that had everything we could want. Not that I intended to cook in Rome but nice to have that option. Everything in the apartment was in good order and very clean. Renting an apartment and using it as a base to see Rome and the region was an easy and economical way of exploring. One of the really fun things was how all of our Italian neighbors "adopted" our kids and showered them with attention and treats.
