Last school vacation our family tried something different. A home exchange
for 10 days with another family on the other side of our country.

My first concern, would our house be trashed? The other family had the same
concern. We had a terrific time, no worries or concerns about exchanging
homes. We got to know our exchange partners well through letters and mail.
Accommodation cost was zero and we could take our pet dog. A luxury that
isn't always possible when staying at a hotel.

Travelling
with our toddler was made easier by him having his own room and lots of
space to play compared to a hotel room.

We saved over $900 in accommodation costs by swapping homes and instead of
leaving our home vacant for two weeks, we had a wonderful exchange couple
staying there visiting our community.

I would highly recommend you consider a home exchange for an affordable
holiday. Just use common sense in choosing an exchange partner.
80 000 people exchange homes for vacations and week end get aways
each year.

A wonderful website explaining about home exchanges is at

Your so right, Lindsay & I have exchanged house 5 times & every one has been a sucsess. We live in Scotland & have travelled to the South of France, California, North Carolina (twice), & Maryland. All we have to do is find the cost of the flight, we exchange cars so that we can get around, Don't be frightened, go for it & I'm sure you'll enjoy.
