We planned to travel N. E. last year but two new granddaughters put our plans on hold. We would like to go early spring but don't trust their weather. Please advise earliest we should go to avoid the snows/ice/cold, etc. We would be driving from Cary (Raleigh area) N. C. and plan to spend nights in motel/hotels. Want to go to Maine but unsure about going into Canada....will probably do that later. Thanks!!

I have lived in New England all my life and I can't answer your question about the weather in Spring.! We have a saying here, "If you don't like
the weather, just wait a minute" However, I think anytime after the first two weeks of April, and especially after May 1 should be fine. Bring a good sweater or polar fleece jacket and a light, hooded raincoat. Maine is great even in rotten old March. Stop in Portsmouth,NH on the way up. It is a good resting point and a beautiful, historic small seaport city on the Maine border.
