First time on the forum - my wife suggested I try the web to help find a place for us to take our two young children for a week or two this summer. We live near White Plains NY, in Westchester county, immediately north of NYC. We would like to find a nice, reasonably priced bungalow, cabin, or house rental, or efficiency that would be appropriate for taking care of a 3 1/2 year old and a 20 month old. Ideally, it would be within (approx.) 2 or 2 1/2 hours from White Plains. This would include the Catskills, Connecticut, Lake Mahopac, perhaps the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have to agree with the other response regarding Lake George. We have 2 children, now 2 1/2 & 4 1/2 & we've gone there every summer since my youngest was 5 months old (and once in the fall). It's very family oriented, clean. We were loooking for a place that was easily accessable by car, (it would be about 3 1/2 hrs for you!), calm waters, cabin accomodations. We always stay at the Cresthaven Resort - we rent the villas - they have 2 bedrooms, nice kitchen, large living room w/ fireplace, tiled bath (with tub - very handy for toddlers!) and - the best part, a large (about 10x20') covered fenced deck off of the living room - great for rainy days, storing toys - we even bring a small blow up pool. They have an onsite family restaurant, 2 pools, lots of trees & a pretty calm beach - def. worth looking into (the treetop villas are
about 11250.00 a week per family).

Several charming areas in New York State publish information guides which may have some leads for you. Contact the New York State Travel Information Center at 800/225-5697, the Sullivan County Office of Public Information for info on the Catskills at 800/882-CATS, the Dutchess County Tourism Promotion Agency at 3 Neptune Road in Poughkeepsie and the Putnam County Visitors Bureau at 800/470-4854 or 914/225-0381. In the Delaware Water Gap area, we have heard good things about Lake View Farm Resort (914/557-3550), Newburgh/New Paltz KOA Hudson Valley Kampground (914/564-2836), Eddy Farm Resort Hotel (914/858-4300) and the Inn at Starlight Lake (717/798-2519).

Lake George, NewYork, is in the Adirondack Mountains, about 500 miles past Albany. I have been going there for years. I think it is so much fun, and there's lote to do for kids and adults. There are many places to chose from where you could stay. I think they are resonably priced. You can look up Lake George on the internet, and find thet many of the places have web sties, and you can even get a catalogue of alomost all of them by e-mailing the Chamber of Commeree.
