I am a single mom of 2 girls ages 5 and 8, and a son age 11. I have been looking for a vacation for a number of months. I have been tossing back and forth Disney World or a Cruise or the Disney World Land/and see. It seems I have the same problems as every other single parent out there. I don't want to pay an adult price for my 11 year old son. As I live in Southern California and also are on a tight budget. We've done the usual daytrips to Disneyland, Sea World, Magic Mountain, the Beach, and Knotts Berry Farm. Does any one have any suggestions for a longer vacation that we could take?

I just went to Disney World with my two kids and stayed at one of the All Star resorts (All Star Music) for only $55/night!! They have shuttles to all the Disney parks and plenty of fun things to do: Downtown Disney has Disney Qwest, Cirque du Soleil, cool shops, theatres (and of course, all the parks). You can get multi-park discount tickets, too.

Verna,

I am also a single parent who is looking for a great
vacation spot. I have two children and I'm
not keen on traveling alone unless I know it
is pretty safe. Did you find a spot you can
recommend? My children are 7 and 8.

Verna - with 3 kids you may want the opportunity to take a break from them, and have each child have time for themselves, by considering an all-inclusive resort or program with supervised kids activities, such as Club Med. If you call a travel agent or 800/CLUB-MED (www.clubmed.com), you'll find some very reasonable prices for week-long packages to their resort in Ixtapa, Mexico, which has a terrific program and is located on a beautiful beach at a popular resort area. Club Med offers good airfare from the West Coast. You might also want to consider a stay at Point Reyes National Seashore (in a rented house or even the lighthouse turned American Youth Hostel) or at Yosemite, where you can book inexpensive camping facilities and get the kids involved in free ranger-led courses and trail walks. Montecito-Sequoia Lodge is another rustic facility with many organized programs and good rates for family cabins. Big Bear and Mammoth ski areas may also be offering packages of interest to you as these busy ski areas try to attract guests in summer. Please let us know what you discover!
