We are looking for a town to stay in MEXICO with our two kids (2 and 5). We have travelled in Indonesia and loved staying in small, interesting towns like Ubud, especially in a "homestay" or rental house. Mexico is much less expensive and we would love to find a similar R&R spot there. We are not too concerned about beaches and less touristy accomodations suit us. Any ideas?

we've spent the last two summers in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, renting a house. Great, relaxing vacation with kids - unfortunately is becoming very popular with a rise in costs, but if you can find a place to stay, it can be wonderful for the kids

Thank you "sec". We had been looking at San Miguel, but wondered if it was appropriate for kids. What did your children enjoy doing? Is it best to rent in the city center or elsewhere? Would you part with the name of the house which you rent? - even off-line?

Very appropriate for kids. Best to rent in city center. My kids attended a language/mexican culture summer program (Centro Mexicano)for a few mornings. There are thermal pools outside of town for swimming. My children liked people watching, and listening to the mariachis in the downtown plaza, buying ice cream bars, viewing the spectacular sunsets from our balcony, going to the huge "tuesday market" and buying all sorts or trinkets.
For accomodations - unfortunately, looks like the house we've been renting is about to be leased out for a year. There are many accomodations listed through the internet, which we double checked when we were down there. All seemed to be legit. In many ways, San Miguel is still a small town and reputation important. Have fun!
