Does anyone have experience traveling to Belize with young children?
We have friends who would like us to accompany them there this May, but
(mom that I am), I have questions about the safety of our 2-year-old
daughter. Mainly I'm wondering about the ability to put child seats
into cars/taxis that are available there, insects, etc. Any feedback???

We were in Belize for 3 weeks with our 4-yr.old last year. It's a beautiful country, very nice people, much more organized and functional than most of Central America. Strong British tradition, excellent hopsital in capital of Belize City. Bright, helpful hotel workers. Your daughter would enjoy the jungle scenery but it may be hot and humid there in May. (We went in February.) On Amergris Caye and other cayes, she would enjoy the small sand beaches and sparkling clear water. Other than that, you're not going to find modern playgrounds, libraries, etc. It's a pretty poor country. Childcare seemed fine, mainly hotel staff or their cousins, grandparents, etc. Very responsible. No, we didn't encounter bugs, I don't think health is a big issue unless someone goes there who needs regular medical care anyway. Of course, if you're in thejungles or on an island/Barrier Reef Caye, it's going to take time to get back to Belize City in an emergency. They have very top quality charter planes used throughout the country, and also a slow-poke ferry system. I guess the bottom line is if you're gung-ho, you can have a great time with her. It's laid back and sweet, not culturally intense or very 3rd world funky. Water is potable, food is rice n'beans, fish, dull but healthy. Send us your report, if you go. Kyle, FTF's editor.
