Our family is considering a winter getaway to Guadeloupe. We found the ClubMed Caravelle on the internet but know nothing about what it's really like. We have two kids, 6 and 7 years old and want a safe, clean, beautiful beach vacation. Can anyone give us some feedback on this resort?

I was there as a single about 14 years ago and while I agree about the rooms and
catering to French visitors, I had a great time. The resort and the beach were just
gorgeous. We went to Club Med Dominican Republic last year with a 4 year old and
had a wonderful time. Great kids' programs, beach, etc. THe rooms
as at all Club Meds are a bit sparse; but the food was great and plentiful, the beach
beautiful, etc.

It has been 12 years since we were there. Unfortunately I have nothing good to say about the experience. Maybe it has changed, but this is what we had to deal with.
They cater to the french tourists, giving them the better accomadations. Our rooms were not nearly as good as my college dorm. The fruit was all canned. There were armed guards patroling the compound. I burnt myself badly on a buffet pan and no one cared, we couldn't get medical help. It was a country with much poverty. When you are spending as much as you do at club med you would expect that they would act happy that your there. The staff had magor attitude problems. They hated their jobs and resented us for having the money to vacation their.
As I said, it was quite some time ago. Get some more feedback.

i'm suppose to do a french project on a french speaking country and i picked guadaloupe. I'm suppose to encourage people to go there. From the research i did it sounds like it's a pretty good place to go on a vacation. From your story it sounds worse than the advertisement they have on the internet. I just like to know if it's still that bad since that was like 12 years ago.

We just got back from a one week stay there (June 2000)
The rooms were small, but we weren't in there enough for it to matter.
The food was excellent - lots of fresh fruit, good breads and cheeses, excellent
desserts. All in all, very tasty.
The island is French so the staff speak French as their primary language, for the most part. They
did translate for the English speaking guests and were very accomodating to all of us. They seemed
to enjoy their jobs, actually, and were quite fun to be around.
We did have a medical emergency while there (niece who fell and required stitches on chin). The doctor
did not speak English and was very brusque. The nurse didn't speak English, either, and we didn't speak
French so asked a fellow (french) guest to translate. The medical situation should really be improved.
But, other than that small glitch, it was an excellent experience and I would recommend it to anyone.
